I have no desire to see or speak of this film ever again. I’m sure it has it’s audience (the director also directed The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, which has come highly recommended to me) but I can’t tell anyone to go watch this movie, I disliked it so much.
I thought it was unimaginative at best and annoying at worst. George Chakiris and Gene Kelly were welcome faces, and the dancing was lovely. Those are really the only complimentary things I can say about it. Everyone else looked profoundly bored in the scenes and therefore I was profoundly bored watching it.
It’s a very pretty film. I think I would have liked it more on mute when I would have to hear the same melody being sung over and over.
