This movie made me heave a happy sigh at the end, it was such a wonderful experience all around. Now I know where The Trolley Song originated (my mom used to sing the chorus when I was a kid. I don’t know why.)Directed by Vincenti Minelli and starring Judy Garland the film is a look in on a family in the early 1900s before the world’s fair. It’s a year in their life and while I don’t really think perfection exists in films, this certainly comes close! It strikes me very much as a rainy day movie, in that it would brighten up a day that was dreary.Knowing that this is the movie where Minelli and Garland met and fell in love adds a whole other layer to the viewing experience. I’ve never really understood what it meant when people say that a film is lovingly shot, but once I saw the way the close ups on Judy are lit (in wonderful soft focus) I understood the concept.I can’t reccomend this movie enough. I loved it so much and I can’t wait to give it a rewatch. My favorite character was Tootie. She’s a bit ahead of her time for me, and I liked it a lot.
