I had no interest in seeing this movie but it was next in the summer movie series so I went with it. I put it off for a day but around 15 minutes into it I was SO THERE.
It’s a caper, I guess. In the vein of something like Snatch or Ocean’s 11. But it’s also a drug movie. It’s also 100% unassalibly British, which of course means it’s cooler than you can imagine. What can I say, British people make really cool, visually interesting movies.
The only things that I could think of when I watched it were Trainspotting (some shots were lifted directly from that movie. I hope it’s an homage and not a direct rip off, though there are worse movies you can rip off than Trainspotting.
The other movie that came to mind stylisticly are the movies of Guy Richie, simply because of the editing choices that were made and some of the framing of the shots themselves. The clipped way the actors speak with very little inflection. It’s dry as toast and I kind of love it a lot.
And the colors! I can’t get over how good the colors were in this movie. It’s ridiculous how much I loved the color choices. The lighting fluctuates with the mood of the characters and that’s just a perfect choice.
You might be noticing that I’m not saying much about the plot, but to mention much about it would be to give a good bit of it away. There are drugs, and bad guys and good guys and morally grey guys. Guys you want to succeed and guys you want to see fail. Guys you’re not sure about till the very end. Those are my favorite kinds of characters and that could be why I enjoyed it so much.
Also, fair warning, this is a dudely movie. Cars and guns and drugs and (regarding the poster) a scantily clad Sienna miller. But if you take it my way, it’s a whole lot of Daniel Craig pre-James Bond wearing really nice clothes and then a lot of the time no shirt. So theres that.
Oh and Dumbledore curses! Amazing.
