I didn’t want to like this movie. In fact I went into it kind of hoping that it would be bad because all I wanted was a mindless horror movie with a mythos I was familiar with and Jared Paladecki because…well he’s really pretty. Those were the only reasons I wanted to see this film in the theatres, and that was the only reason I downloaded the extended, non-theatrical version. I just wanted to see something dumb.It was really smartly written! I was chagrined. I didn’t sign on for something smart, funny, gory, a little scary. I didn’t want characters I cared about! I wanted expendible teenagers that I wanted to see get macheted! But the thing is, I got that too. Intensely unlikable characters who I couldn’t wait to meet Jason. Characters that I couldn’t relate to that just made my eye twitch. But I really loved hating them and when (SPOILER ALERT) they die, it’s an immense sense of satisfaction.I liked it as a reimagining of the lore. I’m sure it probably upset some purists when it came out, but when you have a series that has become so ridiculous as to have Jason going to hell, taking over manhattan, and even going nuts in space…haven’t they already abandoned the lore set up in the first movie anyway? It’s a good change and it makes sense. Hell, there is even some pathos for Jason. It’s so good.So if you’re looking for something silly and retarded that you can just let wash over you like I was: you’re not going to get that. But you are going to get something better. I like it, and I reccomend it. I could be in the minority here, but that’s fine. I’ll go to bat for it. It was really, really good.
