have never seen anything related to Star Trek before this movie. I went because the cast is phenominal and I would follow JJ through the desert on bloody stumps if I had to, such is my devotion. I have forgiven him for Cloverfield. Bless you sir. Bless you. This new origin story for the USS Enterprise focuses on a young James T. Kirk and the way he becomes involved with Star Fleet. There is a lot more but if you’re one of the 5 people on the planet that hasn’t seen this movie yet I don’t want to spoil you. This cast works together as if they were actually a crew on a ship light years away. They’re tight and cohesive and there is not one wrong note that is hit within the cast-though I think the casting choice they made for Spock’s mother was a lot of JJ just wondering if he could snag that actress and nothing more. The rewritting of the Trek orgin story put aside for a moment I have to say that the movie is just a lot of fun. There is a little bit of everything in this movie! Drama, action sequences that I didn’t even breathe during, comedy, romance, aliens, veiled references to almost EVERYTHING ELSE that JJ has done. It’s a sci-fi genre movie for a new generation of nerds that maybe started their love for out there material with Alias and Lost and now are coaxed into the world of the final frontier by someone they know and trust. There was no one better to direct this film and take the franchise over than JJ.Finally, there was no one better to take over the roles of Kirk and Spock than Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto. Their bromance off the set took over their chemistry on screen giving the characters a breath of fresh air. They don’t imitate their iconic counterparts and simply let the characters live. As a new fan I appreciated their being newbies with me, and I’m sure old fans appreciated the breath of fresh air.New fans, old fans, or indifferent movie goers-see. this. film. This film, much like last summer’s Iron man prove that summer popcorn movies don’t have to be dumb to appeal to a wide audience. Sadly though this is the exception but not the rule. In their first week of release, Angels and Demons outgrossed Star Trek by 5 million dollars. So I think that’s why I saw Star Trek twice.
